Oren Recognizes Family of 'Righteous Among the Nations' Recipient

April 30, 2010

WASHINGTON - Earlier today, Ambassador of Israel to the United States Michael Oren
presented Anneke Pleijsier of Maryland and her brother Robert-Jacob Pleijsier
with the recognition of
"Righteous Among the Nations"
following years of research into the actions of their parents,

Neeltje Pleijsier Van Buren and Hendrik Willem Pleijsier

by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes'
Remembrance Authority of the State of Israel.
This award is reserved specifically for those who saved the lives of Jews during the Holocaust.

In attendance were members of both families, including the grandchildren of the Pleijsier family and that
of the young Jewish girl they saved, Zilpa Meibergen. High-ranking diplomatic representatives from the Netherlands,
Poland, and Germany, students, and representatives
from the Jewish community in Washington were also in attendance.

During World War II, Neeltje Pleijsier Van Buren and her husband Hendrik Willem Pleijsier used the
Remonstrant Church in The Hague to help hide refugees from the Nazis.
Among those saved was Meibergen, who after the war immigrated to Israel.
Her daughter, Roni Thome-Gibbes and her family searched for members of the Pleijsier family, in an attempt
to honor the people who saved her mother's life while putting their lives and their loved ones at great risk.

The Pleijsier's humaneness, kindness, integrity and love for mankind will
always be remembered by the grateful Jewish people and the State of Israel.
